Sun Goddess — legitimate career goal?

As summer seeps into my cells, I start to wonder: Is Sun Goddess a legitimate career goal?

Ms. Fiesta appears to have made a go of it, and I do have similar hair...

Pros of being a Sun Goddess:
  • Sunshine.
  • Summer.
  • A great tan.
  • Adoration from sun lovers.
  • Wonderful light shows — rainbows and solar halos dancing at my feet.
  • I love grapes! And wine is even better.

Cons of being a Sun Goddess:
  • Will people blame me for the rain?
  • Can Sun Goddesses function in Canadian winters?
  • That head scarf look? Not a chance! Although I _do_ wear Buffs when hiking
  • The sun has a bad rap right now... will I have fewer worshippers than in the glorious '60s/70s?

I'm on vacation now... Much to consider before I go back to work...

Festival of Words book launch — Anne McDonald

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan:  The annual Festival of Words is always a chance to connect with fellow writers. This year, it featured Anne McDonald's launch, which was another chance to meet with friends from Saskatchewan writing retreats and other writing events.

Anne was introduced by poet John Lent, her editor. She then read and signed copies of her new novel, To the Edge of the Sea.

Wilson & McFadzean: The Festival of Words Comic Strip

Okay, I know — Paul Wilson's and Jonah McFadzean's Culture Days comic strip from the Festival of Words is far too tiny to read in the post below. I think the heat wave got to me — or we all need new glasses.

Here is a version large enough to enjoy — and actually decipher the words, once you click to zoom in!  (Note the lovely dedication to Gary Hyland, the founder of Moose Jaw's Festival of Words.)

Poetry Comics: Moose Jaw's Festival of Words

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan: To promote Culture Days in September, 2011, poet Paul Wilson and artist Jonah McFadzean are creating poetry comic strips at events around the province. Last weekend, Jonah and Paul set up their movable studio at the Festival of Words in Moose Jaw, where Paul also gave personal poetry readings as Poet in Residence at the Invisible Library.

The process involves words by Paul, and drawings by Jonah — which is logical but you never know. Roles can be reversed; it's best not to take things for granted...

eta: Oops! I know, that comic strip is impossibly small. Unless we all need new glasses? So I've posted a close-up of the Festival of Words poetry comic strip.

The poetry comic series will be on display during Culture Days. As for the Invisible Library, you'll have to ask the PiR... And Festival of Words? Great, as usual! It's a wonderful event for writers and readers.

McDonald, Sealy, Miller: Words in the Park, 2

Victoria Park, Regina, SK: Anne McDonald, David Sealy and Steve Miller performed at the Saskatchewan Writers Guild's summer Words in the Park event on July 13. This outdoor reading is a great way to spend a lunch hour, and this week, even the mosquitoes and parking attendants behaved (no bites, no tickets).

Steve Miller is from Vancouver, where he's known for the cowboy, street and slam poetry he performs. Regular readers of this blog know Anne McDonald, who read from her new novel To the Edge of the Sea, and Dave Sealy, who performed parts of his play The Bob Shivery Show.

Carol Morin and Marie Powell: Words in the Park

Carol Morin and Marie Powell were featured at the Saskatchewan Writers Guild's reading in Victoria Park today at noon. The works of both Regina writers touched on gifts — of different kinds.

Carol Morin told the story, "Kokum's Tablecloth", in which Kokum (grandmother) gives a series of wise gifts to her granddaughter Nahanni. Morin also showed the paintings she's created to illustrate the story and opened the reading with drumming and singing.

The protagonist of Marie Powell's young adult historical fantasy has a special gift of sensing that allows him to reach beyond the usual limits of communication and understanding — a useful ability in a violent time of war in long-ago Wales.
